Leasehold

Leasehold is the right to occupy and use a property for a long fixed term, commonly up to 99 years, without owning the land underneath it.

At the end of the term the property reverts to the freeholder unless the lease is renewed. A leasehold interest can usually be sold or mortgaged during the term, subject to the terms of the lease.

The practical difference for an investor is the remaining term: a lease with many decades left behaves much like freehold, while a short remaining term affects both resale value and what a lender will accept.
