Dubai property glossary

Freehold

Freehold means owning a property and the land it sits on outright and indefinitely, which foreign nationals may do in Dubai's designated freehold areas.

Dubai opened defined areas to foreign freehold ownership, and in those areas a buyer of any nationality can own, sell, lease and bequeath the property without a local partner or sponsor. Most of the communities an international investor has heard of are freehold.

Outside those designated areas, ownership for foreign nationals is generally through leasehold or other long-term arrangements rather than freehold.
